Pursuing a career in the beauty industry can seem daunting at first, which is why we want to help! We created a step-by-step guide to becoming an esthetician. Every state has its own licensing requirements so we’ll dive into what’s required in Michigan.

Complete A State Approved Esthetics Program

Your first step to becoming an esthetician is to attend a beauty school! To get your license in Michigan, you must complete at least 400 hours of training. At Multimedia Makeup Academy, we provide you with a well-rounded education so you can enter the world of esthetics with confidence!

Submit Application For Exams

Now that you’ve found and graduated from a school, it’s time to take your exams! First, you’ll need to submit an application through the Michigan Professional Licensing User System. For the online application for an Esthetician License, you must:

  • Complete all fields, answer all questions and upload any supporting documents
    • The application is housed under “Cosmetology”
  • Pay the application fee + 2-year license fee

Pass The Exams

As soon as the Board accepts your application, you will receive a notice. With this notice, you can schedule your exams! The licensing exams consist of 2 parts: the practical and written exam.

Practical Exam

This exam is where you will perform esthetic services with your own kit and mannequin. You must pass this exam with at least a score of 75%. This exam is approximately 90 minutes and will cover the following:

  • Workstation preparation (10 minutes)
  • Basic facial (25 minutes)
  • Eyebrow waxing and tweezing (varied timing)
  • Makeup application (25 minutes)
  • End-of-day clean-up (10 minutes)

Written Exam

This exam is where you will be tested on your theoretical knowledge of esthetic services. The exam will take about 90 minutes and it will consist of 85 scored questions and 10 unscored experimental questions. The exam will cover the following:

  • Safety and Infection Control (34%)
  • Client Consultation (4%)
  • Skin Analysis (13%)
  • Skin Care (27%)
  • Makeup (4%)
  • Hair Removal (13%)
  • Advanced Treatments (5%)

Renew Your Esthetician License

Don’t forget that in order to keep your esthetician, you’ll need to renew every 2 years. Your license will expire in 2 years from the date it was granted. If you fail to renew your license, you may be required to go through a reinstatement process. But luckily, The Board will mail you a renewal notification at least 60 days before to help you remember!
